The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), published by the Council of Europe in 2001, defines six proficiency levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). It is the scale used by the DELF and DALF diplomas, and the one this test estimates.

How does this level test work?
The test is adaptive in stages: it starts at level A2 and serves sets of 5 questions. A strong set (4/5 or better) moves you up a level; a difficult one (1/5 or worse) moves you down; otherwise a second set confirms the current level. The test stops once a level is confirmed, typically after 10 to 30 questions.
Every question is tied to a CEFR descriptor (for example the passé composé / imparfait alternation at the A2–B1 threshold, or the subjunctive after “bien que” at B2). Your result is the highest level where you reach 70% accuracy. It is a reliable estimate to guide your study. Only an official exam (DELF, DALF, TEF) certifies a level.

What do the A1 to C2 levels mean?
The six CEFR levels, one line each:

The CEFR ↔ DELF/DALF mapping is the official France Éducation international alignment. For a Canadian immigration application, the TEF and TCF Canada report results on the NCLC scale: only the official IRCC tables are authoritative.

Can I retake the test?
Yes, as often as you like. The questions covering each level vary between sets, and your progress is saved if you close the tab mid-test.
